Panel: Addressing Inequities in Health and Research for Better Outcomes

Background: Health disparities exist for people from historically disenfranchised groups, who are often at higher risk of disease, lack access to high-quality care, and have worse outcomes. In addition to the many factors that contribute to inequalities in access and delivery of health care, these groups are underrepresented in academia and constitute an even smaller percentage of research faculty. A lack of diversity is also common among research participants. Additionally, if certain demographics are underrepresented in clinical trials and studies, the results may not be universally applicable. We need more inclusive research practices to ensure that interventions and treatments are effective across diverse populations. Data collection is another crucial aspect. We need comprehensive data that captures the nuances of different populations. This will help us identify trends, adapt interventions and ensure that health policies are effective for everyone.
Objectives: The objective of this panel is to bring experts from diverse fields to explore and discuss the disparities that exist in healthcare and research. Some important points will be discussed: How can we promote diversity in research participation? What changes are needed in current research methodologies to ensure inclusion? How can technology and innovation play a role in improving health outcomes for marginalized communities?
